Poldark is returning for a second series, the BBC has confirmed, with Aidan Turner signed up for another outing as television's favourite heart-throb.

The adaptation, a ratings hit on Sunday nights, has been recommissioned for another eight episodes.

Series two will be based on the third and fourth books in Winston Graham's series. Eleanor Tomlinson will also return as Demelza.

Scenes of a shirtless Turner scything a field and emerging from a turquoise sea have won him millions of fans, with a recent #AskPoldark session on Twitter resulting in such questions as: "How do I refrain from licking my flatscreen TV?"

The show was originally made for television in the 1970s, with Robin Ellis in the lead role. Then it attracted audiences of 15 million.

The modern adaptation achieves ratings of around eight million, and the BBC said today Poldark had helped BBC One to its highest audience share in a decade.
