Gavin's blackmail seen by 6.8m on Wednesday's Corrie

Coronation Street topped the soap ratings on Wednesday evening (March 4) but dipped below the 7 million mark, overnight figures show.

The Weatherfield drama was the most-watched programme of the day, claiming 6.77m (32.7%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 178k (0.8%) on +1 as Gavin demanded cash in return for his silence over Andy's identity theft. This was the first time that Corrie has fallen below 7m on a Wednesday this year.

Emmerdale secured 6.11m (32.1%) at 7pm on ITV and 163k (0.8%) on +1 as David and Leyla tried to make Alicia see sense as she blamed herself for Lachlan's actions.

Hollyoaks brought in 931k (5.2%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Maxine rejected Patrick after spending the night with him, while E4's first look was the day's top multichannel show with 580k (3.0%) at 7pm and 151k (0.7%) on +1.

Neighbours entertained 706k (10.7%) at 1.45pm and 863k (6.0%) at 5.30pm on Channel 5 as Toadie discovered Harold's secret.

Home and Away achieved its highest lunchtime rating of the year so far, rising to 322k (4.7%) at 1.15pm on Channel 5. 664k (4.0%) caught the 6pm airing, while 5*'s first look had 468k (2.6%) at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, Doctors was seen by 1.51m (23.1%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
