Liverpool's favourite Googlebox star June Bernicoff has died aged 82, after a short illness.

June and her husband Leon became household names, after they first appeared on the show from their Allerton home in 2013.

Sadly Leon passed away two days before Christmas in 2017, with June heartbroken at his loss.

June moved to Warwickshire last year to be nearer to her family after 62 years living in Liverpool.

Today Channel 4 announced she had passed away, surrounded by her family.

A statement from Channel 4 and production company Studio Lambert, issued on behalf of her family, said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Gogglebox’s much-loved June Bernicoff passed away at the age of 82 on May 5 at home with her family by her side after a short illness.

“As the first couple to be cast for Gogglebox back in 2013 June and her husband Leon were a huge part of the programme’s success. Their warmth, wit and contrasting personalities endeared them to the nation during the course of the first 10 series.

“Following Leon’s passing in December 2017, June wrote her first book, Leon And June: Our Story, which was a deeply moving and entertaining chronicle of their 60-year love affair.

“A remarkably independent, principled woman with a vivacious sense of humour and a huge passion for life, June will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.

"Despite her departure from the show in 2017, she remained a passionate supporter of the programme, watching it every week, and she was in regular contact with the production team.

“Our thoughts are with June’s family – Helen and Ian, Julie and Marc, and her beloved grandchildren Frances, Sam and Faye.

"The family would like to ask for privacy at this sad time but would like to thank the hospice staff that supported them and cared for June so wonderfully and with such compassion in her final weeks.

“June’s death was not related to Covid 19.”

Gogglebox star June cared for in her last days by Myton Hospice

The daughters of a woman who found fame on TV’s Gogglebox have praised the “warmth and kindness” of nurses at a Warwickshire hospice in her final days.

June Bernicoff was one half of the beloved couple June and Leon on the popular show.

Her daughters Helen and Julie described their mum as the linchpin of the family, who would always offer encouragement and support and had a common sense approach to life.

After Leon died, June moved to Warwickshire in October 2019 to be nearer to her daughter.

But around Christmas last year she began suffering with back pain. In April she was admitted to hospital where she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Myton Hospice provided care, with nurses visiting daily, and the hospice even offered support to Helen and Julie.

Helen said: "It was a very rapid decline after her short hospital stay. She moved in with me so I could care for her, the doctor telephoned weekly and the palliative care nurse got involved too. I was thankful to have her at home but it all became a lot easier when Myton got involved.”

“We both looked forward to the Myton at Home nurses’ daily visits.

"It was the little things they did which really made a big difference, like washing her hair, making her comfortable, and keeping the pain under control.

"They showed us how to move and turn her in bed without causing discomfort, and they were also honest about her deterioration.

"We also very much appreciated their warmth and kindness.”
