It even beat the viewing figures of The X Factor final

The Voice UK kicked off its latest series last night (January 6), and it did so in ratings-defying style too, drawing in a pretty impressive audience.

According to The Voice UK's press account on Twitter, the series premiere drew in an average of 5.6 million viewers last night, making it the most watched show of the evening.

Which means that 5.6 million people tuned in last night to see new coach Olly Murs get absolutely owned by reigning champion Jennifer Hudson.

Sorry, Olly.

Not that he's too bothered mind. And, besides, those figures are nothing to sniff at – they even managed to beat 2017's big X Factor final in numbers, as just 5.2 million tuned in to see Rak-Su crowned the winners over Grace Davies last month.

Olly and Jennifer were joined on the coaching line-up once again by Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am last night as the blind auditions round got under way.

While the competition is only just beginning for Olly and co, we've already seen an incredible 16-year-old contestant (and his nan) steal the judges' hearts – so this year's contest is looking good already.

The Voice UK airs on ITV.
