The a capella singing competition won't be back

Pitch Battle has been dropped by the BBC after just one series.

The Saturday-night show fronted by Mel Giedroyc debuted in June this year, and saw vocal groups and choirs battling against each other in the hope of impressing judges Gareth Malone, Kelis and Will Young (plus guest judges like Joe Jonas, Bebe Rexha, Seal and Chaka Khan).

Viewers of the first episode expressed some confusion about the show being billed as an a capella competition when it featured backing tracks – but there was also a lot of positivity from those at home.

However, audience figures weren't stellar, and a BBC spokesperson has now said (via The Sun): "We are proud of Pitch Battle and would like to thank everyone involved in the show but we sometimes have to make difficult decisions in order to make room for new shows so it will not be returning to BBC One next year."

Pitch Battle wasn't the only BBC singing contest that Mel hosted this year: firstly, she fronted Eurovision: You Decide at the end of January, which saw former The X Factor star Lucie Jones selected to represent the UK in the annual camp-fest.

Mel was also the host for Gary Barlow's Let It Shine, the Beeb's search for stars of the new Take That musical, alongside Graham Norton.
