Strictly Come Dancing finally returned to our screens last night – and it's already winning the ratings war

The primetime dancing series went up against its old rival The X Factor on Saturday (September 9), but it seems that Simon Cowell's show just can't compete as Strictly Come Dancing's first show of 2017 quickly proved to be the most-watched show of Saturday.

Yep, according to the BBC, Strictly averaged 8.8 million viewers last night, peaking at 9.5 million, and maintained a massive 44.7% share of the audience.

In comparison, The X Factor's premiere show last weekend was also the most-watched show of the night, but it averaged just 6 million viewers, the lowest since the show's launch in 2004, rising to an average of 6.5 million viewers for its Sunday show.

Last night's Strictly launch show saw this year's celebrities – including comedienne Susan Calman and Saturdays singer Mollie King – get paired with their professional dance partners, so the next episode will now be a few weeks away as the couples get to know each other and start planning routines.

The episode also paid an emotional tribute to the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, who hosted the show for a number of years and sadly passed away last month.

To celebrate his life, the Strictly judges, professional dancers and musician Dave Arch all shared memories during the launch show about what it was like to work with Sir Bruce, and later the professional dancers honoured the entertainer with a beautiful ballroom routine, which they finished with Brucie's signature pose.

The tribute left show host and Bruce's good friend Tess Daly in tears.

"What a routine," she said. "He would have loved that. And our thoughts are with his dear wife Winnie, his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.

"Everyone, and I mean everyone, at Strictly is thinking of you."
