The Team will.i.am singer beat Christina Marie and Sally Barker in the show's live final, and has secured himself a recording contract.

Earlier in the evening, Team Kylie Minogue singer Jamie Johnson was eliminated in fourth place, having received the lowest amount of public votes when the phone lines were frozen.

Digital Spy readers had tipped Christina Marie to win this year's series, while Sally Barker had been a long time favourite with bookmakers.

However, it was the Hackney-based singer that impressed with his performances of 'Wrecking Ball', 'Pure Imagination' and 'And I Am Telling You' to become the show's first ever male winner.

Following his victory, mentor will.i.am said: "I hope you know that this victory is more than just you singing. This is direction and guidance for the rest of your life."

Jackman added: "I want to thank will for everything he's done for me over the past few months. He's been the best coach ever. I want to thank God for providing me with this opportunity and all the opportunities I've had.

"I want to thank my family and friends, because this is not just an achievement for me but an achievement for everyone in the UK who has had a dream and worked hard to achieve that dream.

"I want them to know that if you work hard for your dream you will achieve it," he added.
