Rebecca Adlington's Olympics swimming bronze grabs 9.6m

Interest in the fortunes of Team GB swimmer Rebecca Adlington was high last night (Sunday, July 29), early overnight data suggests.

Adlington's freestyle bronze drew a peak audience of 9.7m at 8.15pm, with BBC One's 7pm-10pm coverage averaging a strong 7.19m (29.5%).

Rowing got the day underway with 2.96m (34%) from 9am, then swimming had 3.73m (33.4%) between 11.30am and 1pm, and cycling raced off with 4.7m (31.9%) from 1.15pm until 5pm. Olympics Breakfast pulled in 1.25m (38.2%) at 6am.

Over on BBC Two, Sue Barker's eclectic presentation of tennis, boxing, archery and beach volleyball drew 2.25m (12.1%), the channel's joint best audience of the day. The Antiques Roadshow followed with the same rating, but an inferior share of 10%.

BBC Three's coverage of Team GB's 3-1 win over UAE scored 1.4m (6.1%) between 7pm and 11pm. 968k (5.8%) were viewing between 2pm and 9pm for gymnastics, archery and sailing, prior to which 620k (6%) watched beach volleyball, badminton and cycling.

This meant BBC Three beat its previous high of 5.8% with a 6.1% all-day share, its best ever. Meanwhile, BBC One averaged 28% throughout the day.
