'I just hate marzipan'

Benjamina Ebuehi has just missed out on a place in The Great British Bake Off's semi-finals as she was sent home by Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry in tonight's show.

Tudor Week turned out not to be Benjamina's forte as her pies, jumble biscuits and marzipan showstopper didn't quite do enough to win her a place in the next round - Patisserie Week.

But it's not that surprising, as she admitted after leaving the tent that she actually can't stand marzipan.

"I just hate marzipan," she said. "I think the taste is horrible, and so I didn't enjoy that bake at all. It was my least favourite bake of the whole show. I will never ever be making a marzipan cake again."

Don't worry, Benjamina is going to keep baking - and has even put her teacher training on hold for the moment - but she joked: "No marzipan, no Tudor ever in my life."

Benjamina didn't have the best week overall, as she had to make a second batch of pastry during the signature pie challenge and it didn't quite cook in time.

And she was second from bottom in the jumble technical round too as her biscuits were a little under-baked.

As for her showstopper, Mary suggested that her apple cake was "heavy" and "close-textured" and complained that it didn't all hold together.

But Benjamina said winning Star Baker in week four was her favourite moment on the show and promised that she'll keep watching.

"I can't wait for the remaining two episodes knowing that I was so close to the end," she said. "I want to see how it all went down in the tent - it's really exciting and I am really looking forward to it."

It was a much better week for Candice Brown, who won Star Baker for the third time after producing a spectacular peacock marzipan centrepiece.

She will now join Andrew Smyth, Jane Beedle and Selasi Gbormittah in Patisserie Week as they take on French pastry, chocolate work and a multiple mini cake bake in an attempt to make it to the final.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Wednesdays at 8pm on BBC One.
