The live Judges' Houses stage of The X Factor was a change "too far", ITV's entertainment boss Elaine Bedell has admitted.
Bedell acknowledged that not all of the attempts to keep the talent show fresh have worked this year, Broadcast reports.
Speaking at the Broadcast Commissioning Forum, she explained: "We embarked on this series wanting some changes. This is one of the issues with long-running shows - you look to them constantly to think how they can be kept on their toes."
Bedell went on: "Possibly with The X Factor we went too far with the mix of live TV in the Judges' Houses episode.
"Universally on the production side we felt that it wasn't successful, but now we are back to the live shows that we know and love."
Bedell, who said she is confident that The X Factor will have a "good run" for the rest of the year, was not drawn about the future of the show.
Both The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent have another series left on their contract with ITV.
"We have a longstanding relationship with Syco and Fremantle which has served us very well," Bedell said.
"BGT has been brilliant this year and bucked the trend by being up year-on-year. Following the series this year we'll be sitting down to discuss their future."
The X Factor continues with the live shows tomorrow (November 7) at 8pm on ITV, when the 11 remaining acts will tackle songs with the theme 'reinvention'.
