The blockbuster match will see one team advance to the quarter-finals

Not only has the temperature begun to rise again, but the 2026 FIFA World Cup is heating up as the round of 16 gets under way. The second knockout phase begins today (4 July) as co-hosts Canada take on Morocco, with a quarter-final place at stake.

England have also made it to this stage, as they topped the group with seven points from a possible nine. They got a scare in the round of 32, however, as they edged past DR Congo on Wednesday (1 July).

Their reward is a tricky assignment against co-hosts Mexico, who haven't conceded a single goal in their opening four games at the tournament. To make matters worse, England will be heading to a fortress in Mexico City, but when does the game take place?

The highly-anticipated match will kick off at 1am on Monday (6 July), meaning it is a late one for UK viewers. There was speculation that the game would be brought forward to 7pm UK time on Sunday (5 July) due to adverse weather conditions, but that didn't materialise.

The match will air on BBC One, with coverage beginning at 12am. The programme is scheduled to run for three-and-a-half hours until 3.30am, with both extra-time and the dreaded penalty shoot-out being a possibility.

We're admittedly getting ahead of ourselves here, as Mexico are likely to be formidable opponents. As previously mentioned, they are yet to concede a goal in the tournament, and they also have a strong record at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca.

The 87,523 seater stadium is over 7300ft above sea level, meaning visiting players often struggle to acclimate to the altitude. This partly explains why it's considered to be a fortress for the hosts, as they've only lost TWO competitive matches there since 1966.

If England do manage to progress, however, they would face either Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals, with that match due to take place in Miami. Kick-off for that match is at a much better time for UK viewers, with it slated to be at 10pm on Saturday 11 July.

If they progressed to the semi-finals, it could be defending champions Argentina waiting, though Egypt, Switzerland and Colombia may have something to say about that. That semi-final will take place in Atlanta, with an 8pm kick-off in the UK on Wednesday 15 July.

The showpiece event will take place at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday 19 July, with a kick-off time of 8pm for UK viewers. It could be a long night, as the halftime show is expected to be a lengthy affair.

There's also a third place play-off match (that nobody ever wants) between the losing semi-finalists, with that taking place in Miami. That will start at 10pm UK time on Saturday 18 July, but here's hoping England avoid that match altogether!
