Dancer Gogonea topped tonight's public vote, while 19-year-old singer Collings was put through by the judges ahead of human-canine double act Pip & Puppy.

When asked to choose between his beloved singing dog duo and the Plymouth-born star, Simon Cowell repeatedly stated that he wanted both to advance to the final and refused to be drawn into naming one by hosts Ant & Dec.

Finally, when the Geordie pair pushed him to make a choice, the 51-year-old reluctantly said: "I'm gonna go with the one I believe the public will want to see in and that is Michael."

Cowell's co-judges Amanda Holden and Michal McIntyre quickly echoed his vote, with the comedian arguing: "I can't see a final without Michael in it."

Following Collings's advancement to the final, the new father gushed that "seeing [himself] in the final is unbelievable", while birthday boy Gogonea thanked the public for their support.

The result means that returnee Michael Moral, teenage singing duo Follow the Right Path, husband and wife act Mr and Mrs, dance troupe the Celtic Colleens and eye-popping variety act Antonio 'Popeye' Francis have all been sent home from the competition.

Gogonea and Collings will return for the Britain's Got Talent final tomorrow at 7pm on ITV1.
